Reading books

There is a subset of the population that wants to be around people but does not necessarily want to talk to people.
We call these people "Introverts." They are lovely. They are tired. And they are currently underserved by the party market.

Enter the Reading Party.
It sounds like a library. It is a library. But with wine and comfortable chairs.

The Format

(Note: This requires zero coordination effort. Tell Pepur "Host a reading party next Thursday," and it will text your bookish friends for you. Save your energy for the reading.)

1. Arrival (7:00 - 7:30 PM):
People arrive. They get a drink. They say hello. They show off the book they brought.
Conversation is allowed.

2. The Silence (7:30 - 8:30 PM):
A bell rings.
Silence falls.
Everyone finds a spot. A sofa, a rug, a pile of pillows.
You read.
Phone usage is banned. Talking is banned.
You just sit in companionable silence, reading your book, while sipping a beverage. It is the most relaxing hour of your week.

3. The Discussion (8:30 - 9:30 PM):
The bell rings again.
You wake up from your trance.
Now you talk. "What are you reading?" "Is it good?"
The social barrier is gone because you have a prop. You talk about the book, not the weather.

The Vibe

Lighting must be warm but bright enough to read.
Music must be instrumental and low volume. (Max Richter is good here).
Snacks must be quiet. No carrots. No chips. Soft cheeses. Grapes. Brownies.

Why It Works

It removes the "Performance Pressure" of socializing. You don't have to be funny. You just have to be literate.
It validates the hobby of reading as a social activity.
It guarantees you actually read that book you've been carrying around for 6 months.

Summary

Hosting doesn't always mean noise. Sometimes the best host is the one who gives you permission to shut up.

A Few Questions You Were Probably Going To Google

Q: Can I bring a Kindle?
A: Yes. But physical books look better. And they signal "I am not checking email."

Q: What if I fall asleep?
A: It is encouraged. If a guest falls asleep at your party, it means they feel safe. It is the highest compliment. Cover them with a blanket and let them be.

Q: Do we all read the same book?
A: No. That is a Book Club. Book Clubs are work. This is a Reading Party. Bring whatever you want. Trashy romance, dense philosophy, manga. No judgment.
